Ashley Geelan’s Victorian News misses Victoria’s biggest political story

Jacinta Allan has been dumped as Victorian Premier. Ben Carroll has been sworn in. Labor has knifed its leader months out from an election. A royal commission into the construction sector is now on the table.

So where is Ashley Geelan?

For a man running a site called Victorian News, this should have been impossible to miss. This was not a quiet reshuffle, a minor policy announcement, or some council press release buried on page five. This was the Premier of Victoria gone in a leadership spill, with the state government thrown into crisis.

Yet a check of VictorianNews.com.au and the @victoriannews.com.au Bluesky feed found no visible article, no obvious post, and no comment about Allan’s fall or Carroll taking the top job.

That silence is the story.

Geelan has no trouble presenting himself as a Victorian news operator. The branding says VicNews. The domain says Victorian News. The social account says the same. But when Victoria’s own Premier is forced out, the outlet appears to have gone missing.

Why?

Is it political bias? Is Allan’s dumping too awkward for the sort of Labor-friendly worldview Geelan prefers to project? Is the failure to cover it because the story damages the side of politics he is more comfortable with?

Or is it simply laziness? Or was he passed out under the desk in the newsroom after another bender? Has Victorian News become little more than a low-effort recycling bin for police updates, syndicated opinion pieces and whatever is easiest to post?

There is also the more uncomfortable possibility: that Geelan likes the status of calling himself a news publisher more than he likes doing the work of one. Real news judgement means recognising when a major story matters, even if it is politically inconvenient, personally boring, or outside the comfort zone of cut-and-paste content.

And this story mattered.

A sitting Victorian Premier gone. A new Premier sworn in. A government in damage control. A leadership spill with huge implications for the state. Any outlet using the words Victorian News should have been all over it.

Instead, Victorian News appears to have found time for “On this day” content, cartoons and routine incident stories, but not the dumping of the Premier.

Maybe Geelan missed it. Maybe he ignored it. Maybe his political bias got in the way. Maybe he just does not have the editorial drive to cover the biggest Victorian political story when it lands.

Whatever the explanation, the result is the same. Victoria’s Premier is gone, the Labor government is in crisis, and Ashley Geelan’s so-called Victorian News has managed to miss the story sitting right in front of its face.

For someone who calls himself Victorian News, that is not a small omission.

It is the whole job.
